我想Old China一文講的是一種今昔的對照。Lamb提到在過去經濟拮据、貧困不堪的歲月裡，會因為看了一齣戲（507）、吃了新鮮的草莓（507）、買了一件工藝品（505），而感動萬分；就如同Lamb的姊姊Mary所言：「那曾經是一種勝利 “Formerly it used to be a triumph. (505)”。」[註一] 過去那種「寧可節衣縮食，也要風雅」的心情，已經隨著作者經濟狀況的改善而不復存在。[註二]
我想，比較困擾你的部份恐怕是這文章最前面的幾個段落。
在文章起始的數個段落，Lamb訴說自己對古董瓷器（ old China ）的迷戀。很有趣的是Lamb他自己也不清楚這迷戀從何（何時）而生：
I have an almost feminine partiality for old china. When I go to see any great house……, but by saying that we have all some taste or other, of too ancient a date to admit our remembering distinctly that it was an acquired one. I can call to mind the first play, ……; but I am not conscious of a time when china jars and saucers were introduced into my imagination. (505)
還有欣賞畫在瓷器上的人物的感受：
I had no repugnance then—why should I now have?—to those little, lawless, azure-tinctured grotesques, that under the notion of men and women float about, uncircumscribed by any element, in that world before perspective—a china teacup. (505)
上面那段文字裡的element是指Natural element （wind, and water…etc. ）等自然界的力量，我想這裡是指地心引力。Lamb覺得瓷器上的男人、女人不受（ uncircumscribed by ）地心引力，漂浮在半空中。上文中的perspective是指繪圖的透視法。對Lamb這個西方人而言，瓷器上的繪圖，是完全違反西畫的透視法的。引文中又暗藏今（now）、昔（then）的對照。
接下來的幾個段落是夾敘夾議，一方面形容瓷器上的繪圖，一方面表述自己對這繪圖的分析：
I like to see my old friends—whom distance cannot diminish—figuring up in the air (so they appear to our optics), yet on the terra firma still—for so we must in courtesy……beneath their sandals.
I love the men with women’s faces, and the women, if possible, with still more womanish expressions.
Here is young and courtly mandarin, ……a furlong off on the other side of the same strange stream! (505)
因為不遵守西方繪圖的透視法，所以 “distance cannot diminish” ，人、物不因距離加大而變得渺小。Terra firma就是firm ground地面的意思。
這整篇文章大致上是在緬懷美好的舊時光（the good old days），一段再也不會回來的日子。曾經覺得珍貴的事、物，因為經濟狀況的改善而變得平凡。「今」，因為物質的充裕，Lamb和姊姊擁有客觀標準量出來的幸福；「昔」，經濟拮据，任何的獲得，都是恩賜，姊弟兩人因此擁有主觀的幸福。Lamb感慨，因為生活不再艱苦，姊弟相依為命的深刻情感也不再 （508）。
我對Lamb最深刻的不是他的文章Old China，而是他低調的人生。雖說我不是在幕前的演藝人員，我實在不能想像一個人的人生能如此的「幕後」，能那麼不計較名聲。老實說我有點愛現，也挺自戀的；若不是愛現加自戀，怎會熱衷blogging，硬是要大家分享我的生活呢？
我隨便講講，你隨便聽聽。真的不會要去請教老師，不要網路上隨便問，這樣真的很容易問到一個在紐約長期失業、在戲劇界快混不下去，英美文學又不太靈光的人呢！

[註一] 括弧裡的數字是頁碼，我用的書是The Norton Anthology of English Literature Vol.2, 7th Edition。我想，你手上的版本恐怕是比第七版更新的，頁碼方面，應該會有所出入。
